Nina Postupack, Ulster County registrar died from protracted illness on Oct. 10

Nina Postupack, the Ulster County registrar who retired in August, passed away on Thursday after a protracted illness.

In 1979, Postupack commenced her professional journey at the Ulster County Clerk’s Office, where she rapidly advanced through the ranks. By 1982, she was appointed Deputy County Clerk, and in 1990, she was promoted to Chief Deputy County Clerk. In 2006, Postupack achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first woman to be elected as Ulster County Clerk. She has transformed the Clerk’s Office into a beacon of public service, characterized by transparency, accessibility, and historical preservation, over the years.

Postupack led a variety of initiatives that facilitated the integration of county services with the community during her tenure. She implemented “Passport Nights” at town councils to facilitate the application process for residents seeking passports. In addition to her efforts to ensure that essential services were accessible to those who were unable to visit the county office in person, she also engaged in “Mobile Government” collaboration with other county departments. She implemented extended hours at the DMV and conducted presentations to inform seniors about the services available to them, recognising the need for greater convenience.

Postupack’s enthusiasm for history resulted in the establishment of an archival exhibit space in the Ulster County Office Building, which serves as a testament to the county’s extensive history. She also supervised the digitisation of land record indexes, a significant accomplishment that guarantees the preservation and accessibility of these records to the public. Furthermore, the archives staff, under her leadership, delivered local history presentations to community groups, schools, and heritage organisations, thereby enhancing public awareness and appreciation of Ulster County’s extensive cultural heritage.

Postupack has been an active member of the community, serving on numerous boards and committees, including the Hudson River Maritime Museum, the Ulster County Boys and Girls Club, and the Ulster County Italian American Foundation, in addition to her professional accomplishments. The Roger W. Mabie Award, the Martha Washington Woman of History Award, and the Clement I. Angstrom Distinguished Citizen Award are among the numerous accolades she has received for her dedication.
