Last weekend, Sarah Haselhorst, an Island Packet correspondent, passed away at her Port Royal flat. She was 31 years old. For over two years, Sarah’s name has been prominently featured in The Island Packet and newspapers in Mississippi, Ohio, and her home state of Missouri.
She concentrated on weather, nature, and climate issues in the Lowcountry, but she also covered health and medical news, breaking news, and general assignments. She was a proficient journalist who consistently had a question, and if given the opportunity, she would ask another. However, the void that her passing creates in the newsroom of The Island Packet is insignificant in comparison to the void she left in the lives of those who knew her personally.
She was a devoted friend who took pleasure in preparing delicious cuisine for her family and baking croissants. She was a leader and an encourager with a keen sense of humour.
She was meticulous in her adherence to AP Style, punctuation, and penmanship. She preferred any location where she could read a book, but she particularly enjoyed the promenade at The Sands in Port Royal. She was most fond of her pets.
She cherished the Town of Port Royal, where she resided, and would stroll through it on a daily basis. When she captured an exceptional photograph of a full moon or sunset from The Sands Beach promenade or viewing tower, she would distribute it to all.
Sarah frequently volunteered for holiday or weekend duty or offered to take on a story that another correspondent was unable to cover. She consistently went above and beyond while at work. In her personal life, she followed the same course of action.
